Training the Next Generation of Aviation Maintenance Technicians

Spartan College’s Inglewood Campus offers two Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Part 147 approved programs. They are an Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) Diploma and an Associate of Occupational Studies Degree in Aviation Management Technology (AMT). Aviation Maintenance technicians keep aircraft in safe flying condition and are certified by the FAA. Aviation maintenance technicians are the highly-skilled, detail-oriented individuals who keep the airways safe and the planes flying.

An Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) performs routine and preventative maintenance on aircraft. AMT’s repair and overhaul aircraft components following stringent regulations set forth by the FAA. This includes a multitude of tasks on both fixed wing airplanes and rotorcraft. These tasks include but are not limited to the structure of the aircraft, the internal system in the aircraft as well as maintenance to aircraft engines and their related systems.

This course introduces the basic theory, maintenance techniques, and troubleshooting procedures used on gas turbine engines. Disassembling, inspecting, reassembling, and adjusting turbine engines are major elements of this subject area. Basic operation and repair of exhaust systems complete this course.

In this course, students learn aircraft structures, techniques of sheet metal repair using proper tools, parts layout, and forming and bending aluminum materials.

In this course, students learn how to service, troubleshoot, and repair hydraulic and pneumatic systems and components. Inspection and repair of landing gear and aircraft electrical systems complete this block of study.

Course Work

Previous experience is not required! Our AMT and A&P programs provide training in everything from changing a tire to rebuilding a turbine engine. You can also learn about all types of aircraft, from a small single engine plane to a large transport plane like those used by major airlines. Students in our aviation maintenance program will study a variety of subjects, such as:

Provides an in-depth study of airframe electrical systems including inspection and repair of components and related wiring, power distribution, and circuit troubleshooting.

Explores the theory, operation, troubleshooting and maintenance of aircraft hydraulic and pneumatic systems in detail.

Covers the theory, operation, and maintenance of aircraft communication and navigation systems with an in-depth study of aircraft instrument systems.

Covers aircraft control surfaces including system rigging, maintenance, inspection, and troubleshooting as well as aircraft fuel system theory.

Addresses mathematics skills needed to calculate aircraft weight and balance as well as basic physics concepts of motion, fluid dynamics, heat, sound, and aerodynamics.

Practices cover corrosion control; materials and processes; maintenance publications, forms and records; fluid lines and fittings; aircraft drawings and mechanic privileges.

Describes how to troubleshoot, repair, and time an aircraft magneto; explain engine instrument, electrical, and fuel systems; plus a reciprocating engine lubrication system.

Discusses propeller operation and inspection requirements, and how to troubleshoot and repair reciprocating engine fuel metering devices.

Explains how to operate and troubleshoot turbine engine lubrication, fuel metering, ignitions, engine instruments, fire protection systems, and auxiliary power.

The Airframe & Powerplant and Aviation Maintenance Technology programs are approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and meet the requirements established in Title 14, Part 147. The programs are designed to teach students entry-level technical skills in airframe and powerplant. 

Successful completion qualifies the graduates to take the written, oral and practical tests with the Federal Aviation Administration for the Mechanic’s Certificate with both Airframe and Powerplant Ratings. The skills and information taught are not only relevant in the aviation industry but also applicable to other maintenance industries, such as: Automotive and Diesel, Heavy Equipment, Power and Light, and Industrial Technology. The general education courses in the associate degree program enhance the students’ background and intellectual proficiency.
